Rally VO:

Hey Beautiful People…welcome to the Silver Beast Podcast!

I’m Rally Preston, everyone’s favorite septuagenarian podcaster. Bold claim, I know, and I have absolutely no proof to back it up.

So these days, if you see me stretched out in my recliner, thoroughly engrossed in a novel, truth is, I’m probably asleep. I’ll be honest.

I’m like my iPhone 4’s battery…I need a whole lot more recharging these days to work.

And by the way, don’t you hate it when somebody catches you napping?

[high voice] “Hey were you sleeping?”

It just sounds so judgmental, right? Like, instead of wasting time on a 10-minute nap, you could’ve fixed global warming instead.

So I’m like, “Oh please, just let me get a few more winks!” “And could you shut the blinds? It’s getting warm in here!”

So anyway…in this episode of the Silver Beast Podcast, I’m going to do my best to put you to sleep.

[different voice] “Well, gee, Rally, you do that every episode.”

Yeah but this time… It’s on purpose.

Because today’s healthy topic isn’t about doing anything strenuous …like using your walker to do handstands. That’s another podcast.

Nope, today we’re going to talk about…oh, you guessed it already, didn’t you? …Napping.

Now I’m no doctor – unless you count my honorary degree from the WebMD website…but in my expert opinion, naps should be a part of every older adult’s wellness routine.

But first, let’s address the sleeping elephant in the room, shall we?  A lot of people think naps are for lazy people. But the truth is, they are.

But hold on, naps also offer a lot of healthy benefits for us active adults of a certain age.

Now, I’ll admit, back in the day when I was much younger and really working hard, sometimes a quick snooze after lunch was my secret weapon. Well maybe it wasn’t so secret, because I’d be walking around the office with half of a keyboard indented on my cheek.

But somehow along the way, I convinced myself those naps were just me being lazy— I just needed to man up and barrel through that dreaded afternoon slump – with my eyes wide open and lots and lots of caffeine.

But now that I’m a little older – okay, okay,  a lot older – I’ve been doing a little research, and what I discovered about naps really woke me up: those quick afternoon snoozes aren’t laziness, they’re genius!

And I think we can all agree, nighttime sleep isn’t always our best friend these days, right? Those bathroom runs, mysterious midnight aches, that classic 3 a.m. lying awake while you’re pondering life… do any of those sound familiar? Well, naps are a GOOD way to fill in some of the gaps after a rough night.

So today, we’re going to look at why becoming a world-class napper might be the best life hack you’ve never taken seriously.

It’s true – a short nap could mean the difference between stumbling around like a zombie all afternoon…or gliding through the rest of your day like a moon-walking Fred Astaire.

So here’s the first thing you need to know: Not all naps are created equal.

The benefits of a nap can vary based on how long you spend zonked out.

So let’s take a quick look at what a 10-minute, 20-minute, and 30-minute nap can do for you. And this is all based on recent scientific findings and the expert consensus of people who wear white lab coats all the time, just to impress the rest of us.

OK, so first, the benefits of a 10-minute quick recharge.

So, a short 10-minute snooze, instantly improves your mental performance. It reduces that sleepy feeling and boosts your cognitive function – without the groggy nap hangover. And the physical benefits of a quick catnap are that it lets your body relax just enough to lower stress and improve your mood. So you wake up refreshed and feeling a little bit peppier, you know, not quite so sluggish, so you’re ready to tackle the rest of your day.

So next we have the 20-minute power nap.

Now this is what the experts say is the sweet spot for napping. 20 minutes is just long enough to boost alertness, concentration and memory retention. In fact, NASA researchers found that pilots who took 20- to 30-minute naps were over 50% more alert and performed better – and let’s hope they weren’t flying an airplane at the time. And the physical benefits of a 20-minute power nap should make you feel less tired overall, and sharpen your motor skills for a couple of hours after you wake up. And that’s not all, a 20-minute snooze is enough time to lower your blood pressure and improve your heart health – so that’s pretty cool too, right?

And finally, there’s the 30-minute nap for those who really mean business.

So the benefits of a 30-minute nap go a bit deeper… you get a thorough mental refresh with this one, along with enhanced alertness and better cognitive function. Now, the downside, you might wake up a little groggy from a 30-minute nap, but, you should notice a pretty good improvement in mental alertness and brain function that can last for around 2.5 hours. And of course, the physical benefits are better with a 30-minute nap…You get a solid energy boost, plus some extra body recovery benefits.

So there you go….The shorter the nap, the quicker the payoff:

A 10-minute nap is an instant pick-me-up for your brain with zero downside.

A 20-minute nap is the classic all-around refresher for your mind and body.

And a 30-minute nap gives you deeper benefits, but may leave you a little groggy for a few right after you wake up.

Alright Beasties, that’s all for today’s Silver Beast Podcast.
