Your chronological age is just one number — scientists can now measure how fast your body is actually aging at the cellular level. Rally walks you through the latest research on what can slow that process down. And here’s the good news: most of it is stuff you can start doing today — no prescription or gym membership required.

RALLY:
Hello there, Beautiful People! Welcome back to the Silver Beast Podcast.
I’m your host, Rally Preston — and you know I’ve got 70 years showing on the old odometer here, and still getting decent mileage on the road of life I think. Just need to make a few more pit stops now. But yeah…chugging along here and I hope you are too.
Alright… I want to ask you something right off the bat today.
What if I told you that you could actually slow down how fast your body is aging?
I mean — you can’t stop aging, let’s not get crazy here.
But what if you could y’know tap the brakes on it a little bit. Turn that biological clock back a little bit. Would that pique your interest?
Well you can. And you don’t need some miracle drug, or a bunch of pricey supplements…there are just a few simple, everyday things – and you might already be already doing these – or could easily start doing them right now.
Want to know more about those?
Of course you do. You’re a Silver Beast. That’s why you’re here…unless you meant to click on Andrew Huberman’s podcast…oopsie. But good news, this one won’t be three hours long. I bet I don’t even hit 15 minutes…well, let’s see.
So today, let’s talk about something called biological aging. And I know, I know — that sounds very text-booky…but stick with me, because what researchers are finding is really exciting for us older adults.
So here’s the deal. You’ve got your birthday age — y’know, your chronological age. Yep, mine’s 70, like I said. And then there’s another number most people don’t know about called your biological age. Now that’s how old your body actually is on the inside, at, y’know, the cellular level. And here’s what’s wild: those two numbers don’t always match up. Some people are 70 years old on their birth certificate but have the cellular profile of someone a decade younger. Others, well… not so much.
Now scientists measure this with something called epigenetic clocks. Your DNA is basically a long instruction manual for your body. As you age, tiny chemical changes happen to it. Now scientists can look at those patterns and see how fast — or how slowly — your body is actually aging. That’s pretty neat, right?
OK so here’s the exciting part. A brand new study, published in Nature Medicine, took nearly a thousand healthy older adults — uhm average age of 70 — and ran a two-year clinical trial out of Harvard and Mass General Brigham. Half took a daily multivitamin. The other half took a placebo. And at the end of two years? The multivitamin group showed measurable slowing across all five biological aging clocks the researchers were tracking.
Now how much? About four months of slower biological aging. Just from swallowing a daily multivitamin.
Now you might be thinking — well just four months? Well big whoop-tee-do.
But here’s the thing. The lead researcher from Harvard put it this way: it’s four months of your cells aging more slowly. And when cells age more slowly, a lot of other good things can happen too. And the people who got the most out of this were the ones whose biological age was already running ahead of their actual age at the start — which, honestly, probably describes a lot of us who’ve uh burned the candle at both ends for quite a few decades. So, good news there.
Oh, and I know you’re wondering…the multivitamin they used in the study? Centrum Silver. Plain old Centrum Silver, available at any drugstore, Amazon, whatever.
Now, popping a multivitamin’s a good start. But it’s just one piece of this puzzle — and maybe not even the biggest one. Because there’s more research on these same biological aging clocks that shows certain lifestyle habits can move the needle in a big way too.
So let me quickly walk you through a few of them.
EXERCISE. No surprise here — it’s always on the list, I know. But a large study that tracked over 3,000 older adults found that regular moderate-to-vigorous physical activity significantly slowed biological aging. And we’re not talking marathon training. Brisk walking, swimming, gardening — stuff that gets your heart rate up a bit. That’s enough to make a real difference on those aging clocks.
Ok, next, SLEEP. A study of nearly a thousand people found that good quality sleep was one of the lifestyle factors that can really slow down biological aging. Your body does serious cellular repair work while you’re sleeping. And the flip side? Consistently poor sleep accelerates biological aging — your cells get all stressed out and start ticking faster. So those seven to eight hours a night? That’s not laziness. That’s biological anti-aging therapy right there.
Alright, next, DIET. Researchers at the Women’s Health Initiative found that eating more fruits and vegetables — especially the colorful ones – uh those with orange, yellow, and uh red pigments — was strongly tied to slower biological aging. Uh, fish showed similar benefits too. Basically, the closer you are to what your grandmother might have called “eating sensibly,” the younger your cells are likely to clock in at. And here’s a great stat to close this one out: one study put men aged 50 to 72 through an eight-week diet and lifestyle program. And at the end? Their biological age had dropped by nearly two years compared to a control group. You got that, right? Two years. In just eight weeks. From food, sleep, exercise, and relaxation combined. Now that’s a big deal.
Alright, next one, NOT SMOKING. Quick one here. Lots of studies on epigenetic aging say smoking is one of the strongest accelerators of biological aging — lighting up shows up on every clock. So if you still smoke, this might be the best reason to talk to your doctor about quitting. And if you quit years ago like me? That decision is still paying you back.
KEEPING YOUR WEIGHT REASONABLE. Not gonna nag anyone here. But the research consistently shows that a higher BMI — particularly obesity — is one of the factors most associated with faster biological aging. Even modest improvement in weight, as part of a sensible diet and exercise program, is a real win for those aging clocks.
Alright. So let’s whittle all this down to some easy action steps.
Action Step 1: Talk to your doctor about a daily multivitamin. For a lot of us older adults, getting the right nutrient levels from diet alone gets harder over time. Ask whether a daily multivitamin like Centrum Silver makes sense for you.
Action Step 2: Move your body. Regularly. Aim for around 150 minutes a week of moderate activity. Walking counts. Swimming counts. Chasing your grandkids around counts. Move a lot. No gym required.
Action Step 3: Guard your sleep. Seven to eight hours. Consistent bedtime. Cool, dark room. Limit your screen time at night. And if you have real sleep issues — trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, snoring badly — please talk to your doctor. Poor sleep is aging your cells faster.
Action Step 4: Lean into produce. Add one more serving of colorful fruits or vegetables to your day. Berries, sweet potatoes, spinach, broccoli, carrots. Toss in fish a couple times a week if you can. You don’t have to overhaul your whole diet — just nudge it in the right direction.
And Action Step 5: Don’t try to do all of this at once. Pick one thing. Start there. Small, consistent changes over time add up to some real power. That’s what the research shows.
Here’s the bottom line, Silver Beasties…
Aging is not entirely out of our hands. Birthdays you can’t do much about — but biological aging? You’ve got more say in that than you might think. A daily multivitamin. Moving more. Sleeping well. Eating smart. Each of those moves the needle back on your biological age. Stack them together, and you’ve got something pretty amazing going on at the cellular level.
The clock is still ticking — no use pretending it isn’t. But you have more say in how fast it ticks than you probably realized.
Look, I know you…you’re a Silver Beast. Aging boldly, not passively. And now you’ve got the science to back that up…so keep it up!
Alright, this is Rally Preston — take your vitamins, take a walk, get some good sleep, and I’ll catch you next time right here on The Silver Beast Podcast. Take care!
