RALLY:

Hey there, Beautiful People!

Welcome back to the Silver Beast Podcast.

I’m Rally Preston. Seventy-one years old and still upright – well, most of the time.

Well, today, we’re going to be putting out some fires.

I’m making you all volunteer firefighters – you know how to handle a firehose, right? No? Oh boy.

Well look, grab your garden hoses then. Because we’ve got some blazes going we need to put out pronto.

And these conflagrations are hitting pretty close to home – in fact, they’re probably in a lot of our bodies right now.

So today, if you hadn’t guessed, we’re talking about inflammation.

Alright, now, not exactly the inferno you were picturing – but inflammation is something that can smolder in your body – and usually there’s no flames or smoke, so it might not be, you know, that obvious.

But there’s a good reason we’re gonna tamp these things down before they get out of control…

New research says inflammation in your body could affect your mood, your energy, even your motivation. Not to mention cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, bone and muscle loss, frailty – yeah, all kinds of five-alarm problems due in part to inflammation.

So okay, a quick refresher course on what inflammation is – for you newbie firefighters.

So, inflammation basically is your body’s alarm system.

Let’s say you cut your finger. Inflammation rushes in. And that’s good; that’s what you want. It fights infection. Heals you up. And then it takes off after it’s done its job.

But sometimes, inflammation, well, it doesn’t know when to quit.

It just…hangs out. Lays low. Kind of smoldering in the background, sometimes for years. So yeah, there’s times when inflammation overstays its welcome.

Now when it comes to us older adults, scientists came up with a very cute name for this. They call it inflammaging or inflammaging. It’s a combo of the words inflammation and aging. And it’s so endearing, right? Inflammaging. Yeah, nice.

Basically, your body’s stuck with it. No five-alarm blaring to let you know it’s there. It’s just quietly loitering about. In the background. All the time. Very stealthy. But you’ll probably feel it wearing you down.

Okay, so where’s this persistent inflammation coming from?

Researchers point to a handful of common sources … and look, let’s call them what they are: they’re arsonists, right? Okay, let’s run through the wanted poster here and check out these guys.

Alright, arsonist number one: zombie cells

Oh! Another cute name. Well, it is much easier to say than cellular senescence – and that’s the real name.

And this is basically old cells that stop working, but don’t die off. Which, that sounds like me in retirement.

But yeah, these zombie cells just hang around and won’t leave.

And here’s the worst part: the zombie cells pump out inflammatory junk. Nonstop.

So the more we age, the more zombie cells pile up. That’s inflammation and zombie cells.

Alright, arsonist number two: a tired immune system

This one’s called immunosenescence. Yeah, another fun word.

Basically, your immune system gets a little tired, more lazy. And it starts missing real threats to your body. Or maybe overreacting to nothing – these guys can be real drama queens. So those little shenanigans your immune system pulls can cause chronic inflammation too.

Alright, moving along. Arsonist number three: worn-out power plants

Alright, remember your mitochondria? Those little energy factories in your cells?

As they age, they get less efficient.

Sputtering, like an old gas lawnmower – which, I don’t know, can you still buy those?

Anyway, those struggling mitochondria create inflammatory junk you don’t want either.

Alright next, arsonist number four: your gut gets cranky

Yeah, your gut has trillions of bacteria living in it — and that’s great.

And as we age, that balance can shift. Fewer good bacteria. And more rabble rousers acting up in there.

So when things go off kilter there, inflammatory stuff can seep into your bloodstream.

And scientists actually call this leaky gut. Yeah, another charming term.

And your gut talks directly to your brain.

So gut trouble can mean mood trouble too, among other things.

So, we’ve got little fires spouting up everywhere —so wow, are we doomed?

I mean we’ve got inflammation going on from zombie cells, sputtering power plants, a lazy immune system, and cranky gut bacteria. And that’s a lot.

Now here’s the good news, Silver Beasties.

You’ve got some real power here to tamp inflammation down. You really do.

So let’s talk about what actually helps put out these fires.

Fix one: eat the rainbow

Colorful fruits and veggies fight inflammation. This one’s simple.

Berries, leafy greens, bell peppers — just load up on those.

These are packed with things like polyphenols.

Think of polyphenols as tiny firefighters, putting out the embers.

Also, dig into fatty fish: salmon, sardines, tuna. These are great sources of anti-inflammatory omega-3s.

Now here’s the flip side. Watch the processed stuff.

So packaged snacks, sugary drinks, fast food. Those are not great choices.

These all feed the bad gut bacteria. Limit the junk food as much as you can – they fan the flames.

Alright, fix number two here: feed your gut friends

So fermented foods are the gold here. So like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, a little kimchi. These bring good bacteria right to the party.

And fiber matters too. So beans, oats, whole grains.

Fiber feeds the good bacteria, and they thrive on it.

So happy gut bugs, calmer inflammation. Simple as that.

Alright, fix number three: move your body

Now exercise is basically medicine for inflammation.

And it doesn’t need to be intense. Walking counts. Gardening counts. Dancing in the kitchen counts.

Regular movement calms those zombie cells right down.

Now I know some days motivation’s in short supply. I get it. But here’s the thing — you don’t need a lot.

Just ten minutes. A short walk around the block. But do more, of course, if you can. You’ll feel better after. Try it – and I think you’ll see.

Okay, fix number four: protect your sleep

Poor sleep cranks inflammation way up. Every time.

Your body needs those deep sleep hours to repair.

So keep a regular bedtime. Even on weekends.

So skip the late-night news, the doom-scrolling, all that stress. You don’t need it. Nothing good’s happening on your phone after 11 PM anyways. So yeah, get to bed at a decent time every day, and that’ll help fight inflammation.

Alright, fix number five: stay connected

Now this one is kind of surprising. But it’s a real thing.

Loneliness actually raises inflammation markers in your body. Connection, on the other hand, calms your whole system down.

So you know, call a friend. Join that card group. Say yes to the neighbor’s barbecue invite.

Your body benefits just as much as your heart does, so stay connected to friends and family.

Alright, it’s time for your Silver Beast Action Steps to fight inflammation. And these are quick and simple.

One: Add one colorful fruit or veggie to your plate today.

Number two: Try a fermented food this week. Yogurt’s an easy start. But choose a pretty clean one without all the additives and sugar.

Alright, number three: Take a ten-minute walk. Get out there today, if you can.

Number four: Set a consistent bedtime. And stick to it. That’s it.

And number five: Reach out to a friend, a family member, whatever. Just say hi, and have a nice little chat. Because loneliness is just not good.

Alright, that’s it. Five simple moves to fight inflammation. Pick one or two today, and add more as you go.

I know these are small steps, but just keep at them – they’ll add up to a battalion of inflammation fighters over time.

So there you go, Silver Beasties.

Your mood, your energy, your motivation — they’re all connected.

And they can all be impacted by inflammation in your body.

And just a quick reminder — I’m not a doctor. Or a fire chief. That’s probably obvious. So this isn’t medical advice. Just food for thought. If you suspect you’ve got chronic inflammation going on, please see your doctor.

Alright, that’s it for today, Silver Beasties.

Hey, take care of that body. Douse those little fires of inflammation before they turn into something bigger, alright? Eat right, exercise, stay in touch with your friends and family, and sleep well. And all those will go a long way to extinguishing inflammation in your body. And that’s what we want.

Alright, I’m Rally Preston, and I will see you next time right here on the Silver Beast Podcast. Take care!
